Has anyone investigated a home with smart home technology. Basically from what I understand this is a home that is operated via computer. Can it be disabled or shut down? Could spike in electrical lines cause small appliance failures, lights to turn off and on or set off fire alarms. If so is there is there something that be added to the system to alleviate  the disturbances spikes cause,

Yes, We have worked around this type of system before. They can cause all the problems you reported and more. It depends on who the manufacture is on weather its easily corrected or will take a lot of work.
