Is it just me or has the news taken on a Roseanna Rosannadanna vibe?  The news outlets start reporting about the latest terrible plague, attack, crash, downturn, or whatever the disaster of the minute is; doing news bulletins, splashing it across the headlines, getting people worked up and scared because the world is ending or worse and it's happening right now.  Then, in a few days or weeks, the world hasn't ended, half the world population hasn't dropped dead in their tracks or a big chunk of the earth's landmass hasn't sunk into the dark abyss, and somebody goes "Hey, what's the h**l, none of the horrific scenarios have happened" and the news outlets look sheepish and go "Oh, never mind".

Soap Box      Well, have you ever seen a day when almost nothing happened that is news worthy? They will make up stuff! IF its nothing big they will make it sound like the world is about to end. Have you ever watched a on the scene news report, they always get the dunbest person around to say something on camera, so they can play up the incident.

News reporting is not about reporting the news, it's taking what is happening and specularrising it.

So no it's not you. It's just the way the news is being reported these days.
Its not about reporting the truth, it's about reporting what will catch your attention and shock you.

We consumers are partially to blame for that though. They report doom and gloom, blood and guts, and we eat it up and beg for more.  Good news is cool, but only in small doses. There was a newspaper that came out a few decades back that decided to print only good news. It failed miserabley because nobody wanted to pay money to read all feel good stories. So after a month or so they gave up. They converted back to the well used formula of four parts bad news to one part good. They've been goin strong since.
Now as for blowing things out of proporion, I agree 100%. But again, we eat it up!!

It's not just "news" either, it's the weather too.  We have a guy here that everybody has started calling T** Scary, because he blows everything sssooo out of proportion.  A month or so back, he was breaking into regular programming with these reports of a terrible storm that contained  damaging winds, hail, downpours and a possible funnel.  Everyone was being told to go to the center of the house, etc. and that it would be directly over where I live in 7 to 10 minutes.  Well, I was in the kitchen listening to all this and looking out the window at a slight breeze and a sunny sky.  So I decide to go out and see just how bad the clouds approaching us were, only to find 1 medium size, kinda gray cloud.  So, I think I must have heard him wrong and he wasn't talking about my area, so I go in and watch the reports.  No, he was talking about my area and the storm was almost on us.  I'm so glad we were forwarned about that devastating storm, cause that terrible storm cloud blocked out the sun for a good 3 or 4 minutes.  2 hours later the same guy stood there, on the evening news, and reported no measurable rain for our area.   Banghead
