Occam's Razor:
one should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything.

I was perusing over a couple of paranormal websites, including our own, that claim this as the basis for their investigations. What it basically means is that the simplest, easiest, and closest explanation for something is generally the right one. In other words if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably not a bald eagle that was covered in radioactive waste then hit with solar radiation and mutated to seem like a duck.

Using this method is very useful in the paranormal world. However, a lot of times in our excitement and anticipation, we tend to throw this out the window because we hope so much that something is haunted. It happens to all of us, but as true researchers we must get over the urge to ignore the obvious. The paranormal world exists, and we have a wonderful opportunity to bring it into the light. But nothing good can come from convincing yourself, and trying to convince others, that something mundane is paranormal "disguised"

You are so right Daniel.  When I was going through EMT training, we had a DR./Professor that always told us that if you hear hoof beats look for horses not zebras.  He always said M&B before E&E.  Translation:  Rule out the mundane and boring before looking for the exotic and exciting.   Bang
